Stay updated and catch all the action of the new Leagues Cup edition, an annual soccer showdown between Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs from the United States and Canada and Liga MX teams from Mexico. Hosted in North America, this year marks the fourth edition of this exciting tournament.
The first edition of the Leagues Cup was held in 2019, featuring four invited teams from each league (MLS and Liga MX) competing in a knockout tournament among eight clubs. The final took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The second edition, following the same format, was played in 2021, with teams qualifying based on their league standings.
In 2022, the Leagues Cup was not held due to a compressed calendar, leaving no available dates for the competition. Instead, the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase took place, featuring friendly matches at the SoFi Stadium in California.
Starting in 2023, the Leagues Cup included all MLS and Liga MX clubs competing over a month. Three spots in the CONCACAF Champions Cup were awarded to the finalists and the third-place winner, with the champion advancing directly to the Round of 16.
In the 2019 Leagues Cup final, Cruz Azul defeated UANL Tigres 2-1 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
Club León won the 2021 Leagues Cup by beating Seattle Sounders 3-2 at Allegiant Stadium.
Inter Miami claimed the 2023 Leagues Cup title after defeating Nashville in a penalty shootout (10-9) following a 1-1 draw in regular time. This was Lionel Messi's first title with the Herons, making them the first U.S. team to win the competition.
- 2019: Cruz Azul
- 2021: Club León
- 2023: Inter Miami
A total of 47 teams will compete in 77 matches across Canada and the United States. The top 15 teams from each league are divided into 15 groups based on their standings from the previous season, while the remaining teams are drawn into groups based on geographic proximity. The group stage consists of three round-robin matches, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage. Additionally, two teams receive automatic berths to the knockout stage: the current MLS Cup champion and the highest-ranked Liga MX team from the previous Apertura and Clausura seasons. The knockout stage follows a single-elimination format.
The opening matches of the 2024 Leagues Cup will take place between July 26 and July 28. The second round of matches will be held from July 30 to August 1, while the final group stage matches will be played between August 3 and August 6.
