Jose Mourinho is one of the most respected and prominent coaches in the history of world football. Throughout his career, he has been known for winning multiple titles, but also for his statements.
Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, Porto, Inter Milan, AS Roma, and other teams have been fortunate to have a coach like Jose Mourinho. The former translator for Louis Van Gaal at FC Barcelona has had a remarkable career, known not only for his success but also for his self-confidence and self-esteem when speaking to the press. Many times he spoke in a challenging tone, and at other times he showcased his tactical knowledge.
1- The Special One: When he moved from managing Porto in Portugal to Chelsea FC in England, Mourinho declared that he is 'the Special One.
"Please do not call me arrogant because what I say is true. I’m European champion. I think I’m a special one.”
2- This quote was made by Mourinho when he was the head coach of Inter Milan, before the semifinals of the 2009-10 Champions League against Barcelona, coached by Josep Guardiola. The Spaniards were the best team in the world, and the Italians were seen as the likely underdogs. Leading up to the match, the Portuguese coach compared the two squads to cars.
“It’s not important how we play. If you have a Ferrari and I have a small car, to beat you in a race I have to break your wheel or put sugar in your tank.”
3- A winning UEFA Champions League coach must have high morale. Mourinho believes this.
"If I have to give myself a rating from a professional standpoint, on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give myself an 11."
4- José Mourinho's tenure at Real Madrid began with significant signings like Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Özil. However, in his first match against Mallorca, the Merengue team drew 0-0. In response to the criticism, the Portuguese coach compared football to magic.
"Look, I’m a coach. I’m not Harry Potter. He is magical, but in reality, there is no magic. Magic is fiction and football is real".
5- Mourinho's confidence was evident in his statements about his personality. In the face of controversies regarding his coaching style and responses, the coach defended himself using all kinds of arguments.
"If even Jesus Christ wasn't liked by everyone, just imagine me."
6- Mourinho always defined himself as a coach who tells the truth in every situation.
“In a hypocritical world, not being hypocritical is a great flaw. It’s a flaw I have and will always have.”
7- His approach to life as a coach has earned him a reputation in football. At the same time, Mourinho is someone who always imposed his ego and never had preferences for any club.
“Madridista, interista? I am Mourinhista.”
8- This quote originated in 2010 when he was the coach of Real Madrid. At that time, starting striker Gonzalo Higuaín was injured, so Mourinho chose to put his backup forward, Karim Benzema, on the field, who is nicknamed "the cat."
"If you don't have a dog to go hunting, you go with the cat."
9- Mourinho's mentality: Mourinho believes that after each success, there’s no time to celebrate. He has stated this after winning major titles, such as with Inter Milan.
"Some people celebrate after a victory, but for me, there’s no time to celebrate success."
10- His father and grandfather made a living from football, to the point that when his children were born, they were busy working on a pitch. Mourinho shared it this way:
"Football is my destiny. It has always been a part of my life. For example, when I was born, my father was on the field, and when my daughter was born, I was on the field. Football is that important."
